Grassy Creek Gem Show - Spruce Pine, NC

By Rodney | August 11, 2007

I was set up at the grassy creek gem show in Spruce Pine, North Carolina July 25 thru Aug 5. This show was one of the best on this side of the United States in terms of Southeast minerals that was offered for sale. One fellow had many slabs and cabochons of Crabtree mine emeralds. He had slabs by the five gallon bucket, and said that he had 26 buckets. I tried to buy a bucket, but after he weighed it, the bucket weighed 40 pounds. He had said this would be 50 cents a gram, so that came out to about $9,000.00 for a bucket. Even after he offered it to me for $5,000.00 a bucket, I had to pass. It was worth it, if I wanted to wait 10 or 20 years to get my money back. Another fellow had a killer cluster of emeralds from the same locale.

In addition to Graves mountain Rutile and Jackson’s crossroads amethyst, & hiddenite that I had for sale, here is some of the things I saw for sale at the show: Diamond Hill amethyst, more rutile by 4 other dealers, crossroads amethyst by 4 other dealers, Crabtree emerald by 3 dealers, Hiddenite by 3 other dealers, emeralds from hiddenite by several dealers, Eddie rucks was out with some clams with calcite, Matthew price with his Arrowhead mine arkansas quartz crystals, Charlie Padgett with graves mountain minerals, John Denny ( Riviera ), Laurie ( Laurie’s rocks ), several guys with Brazilian amethyst geodes, Jerry Call with nice faceting rough. The whole place was just loaded with some amazingly nice items. This show was supposedly lacking attendance from previous years. I saw a couple of tailgater’s ( guys who pull up and hawk minerals out of trucks and vans –but haven’t paid the show fee ).

If you only go to one show, the Grassy Creek show is the one to go to this side of the states. I will most likely be set up again there next year.
